Although the rates are higher in men than women, syphilis is a concern for pregnant women who can miscarry from the infection or have a baby born with syphilis and congenital disabilities.
The STD rates in Sacramento County are skyrocketing and leaving many area health officials scrambling to reduce the numbers through awareness and education at the local community colleges. The county had the 6th highest rate of chlamydia out of 58 counties between 2013 and 2017.
