The city of Oakley, CA, in the San Francisco area, is in the middle of an STD crisis. The CDC reports Contra Costa County, where the city is located, ranked 63rd in the nation for gonorrhea by county with 1,765 new diagnoses in 2017.
Between 2013 and 2017 the county’s number of new chlamydia cases jumped from 4,054 to 5,735. Syphilis diagnoses are also on the rise, climbing from 77 in 2013 to 132 in 2017.
Contra Costa County infectious disease officials are concerned about the increasing number of people living with HIV in the area and are working to improve education, especially among young people about the real risk of an HIV diagnoses. As of December 31, 2014, the county had nearly 2,100 people living with the virus.
There are a few locations near Oakley that offer STD testing and related services. One place is the Contra Costa Health Services Brentwood Health Center on Sand Creek Rd near the Contra Costa County Brentwood WIC building. They offer services at another clinic at the Pittsburg Health Center on Loveridge Rd.
The nearest Planned Parenthood facility is at the Antioch Health Center on Buchanan Rd. The clinic is accessible by bus route 390. A little further is the Rainbow Community Center in Concord on the corner of Willow Pass Rd and Mt Diablo St. The site is a short walk from the route 20 and 320 bus stop at the corner of Concord Blvd and Grant St.
Some offices may offer free testing and other services. Keep in mind these clinics don’t offer extended hours and will require proof of income.
