Parkway, CA, is a community in Sacramento County fighting a growing STD outbreak. Cases are rising for all STIs, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis.
Chlamydia numbers are increasing quickly, with 9,764 new cases in 2017 and 11,645 in 2018. Over the same 12 months, gonorrhea infections jumped from 3,329 to 3,838.
Primary and secondary syphilis are also a concern. During the year between 2017 to 2018, the numbers more than tripled from 37 to 113. In addition, early non-primary and non-secondary cases increased from 31 new infections in 2017 to 51 in 2018.
Early syphilis diagnoses went up during the same year, too, from 456 to 633. Of grave concern are congenital syphilis cases. In 2014, the county reported none, and four years later, it had 10.
Sacramento County health officials are working to lower these skyrocketing STD numbers by urging all individuals that are sexually active to get tested regularly and help safeguard themselves and their partners from these preventable diseases.
