The country is presently in the midst of an STD epidemic. Broward County ranks among the highest in STD transmission rates in the state. Per 100,000 residents there are almost 2,000 new STD cases reported each year.
Broward County rates are high enough now that the area comes in with the second-highest AIDS rate in the state.
According to recent reports from the CDC, approximately 19,465 people are living with HIV in the Fort Lauderdale area – which includes the Hollywood reports.
Public health officials recommend all sexually active persons seek out regular testing, use condoms, and have frank discussions with all sexual partners. Locations around the Hollywood area serve specialized populations; for example, Latinos Salud, which serves the local gay Latino community. Assistance exists at the County level for those living with HIV meeting income criteria requirements.
Testing locations include the King David Foundation Incorporated located on Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura and the More than Conquerors Outreach Ministries situated on Northwest 2nd Avenue in Miami Gardens. There is also the possibility for free STD testing but you must show i.d.
