In 2017, there were 7,549 HIV/AIDS cases among people between the age of twenty-five to thirty-four in Essex County, New Jersey. However, the (primary and secondary) syphilis rates were 12.3 for every 100,000 people. Also, in 2016, the county’s gonorrhea rate was 220.6 for every 100,000 people.
Between 2012 and 2016, there was a 4.9 percent increase in chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early and late syphilis cases in Essex County.
Essex County residents have many options when it comes to STD testing. North Hudson Community Action Corporation (NHCAC Health Center at Passaic) on Passaic Street and Barnabas Health Medical Group (United Medical Lyndhurst) on Rutherford Avenue are STD testing locations.
The Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey (Montclair Center) on Fullerton Avenue is also a testing location in the county. County residents can also seek STD testing at Newark Community Health Centers Incorporated (Corporate Office) on Broadway and Kearny Department of Health on Kearney Avenue.
Other testing locations include Newark Community Health Centers Incorporated (East Orange Primary Care) on William Street and the Newark Community Health Centers Incorporated (Orange Health Center) on North Day Street.
Free STD testing may be provided at several locations in the county for people who meet eligibility requirements. Nevertheless, there may be limited tests offered and many may not be comprehensive.
Also, many locations may have limited hours and walk-in services may not be offered. Plus, some places may not allow people to schedule appointments in advance. It should also be noted that some locations may not provide medical consultation or access to medical prescriptions.
