Long Island has a big HIV problem, and many people don’t know they have it.
In 2015, in Nassau County, 109 people were diagnosed with HIV and 52 with AIDS. There were 170 early syphilis cases and 509 gonorrhea cases, 66 of those being teens. 1,063 men and 2,488 women were diagnosed with chlamydia, most of them young people.
Health officials recommend better sex education in schools and regular testing.
They hope to diagnose and treat HIV-positive individuals that still don’t know they are infected, including by providing free STD testing at some sites.
There are several places to get tested in Nassau County. City MD Urgent Care, on Herricks Rd in Minneola, offers walk-in STI testing. Planned Parenthood of Nassau County Incorporated is located on Fulton Ave in Hempstead. You can get HIV testing at the Hempstead Health Center on Main St.
