Hempstead, NY in southwestern Nassau County is in the middle of an STD outbreak that’s not slowing down. There were 4,790 new chlamydia cases in the town between 2012 – 2014. In comparison, the entire county had 6,556 cases during the same time. Another report for 2013-2017 found nearly 10,000 new cases just in Nassau County.
Also between 2012 – 2014, the town reported 1,068 new diagnoses of gonorrhea in residents ages 14 and older. The county total was 1,379 during that time. Between 2013 – 2017, another NYS report for Nassau County had 1,544 new cases of gonorrhea.
Early syphilis rates are also on the rise in Hempstead with 185 new cases between 2013 -2017.
A report from Northwell Health’s Center for AIDS Research and Treatment at North Shore University Hospital identified “hot spots” of HIV outbreaks in Hempstead. Leading health experts are working with the local community to educate, get people tested, and those with a positive diagnosis into treatment.
One location offering HIV testing and STI education in Hempstead is the Planned Parenthood of Nassau County Incorporated at the Hempstead Center on Fulton Ave across from California Ave.
NuHealth, the Long Island Federally Qualified Health Center also offers STD testing at the corner of Main St. and W. Columbia Street in Hempstead. They have two additional locations in the area, one on Nassau Rd in Roosevelt, and the other in Freeport on S. Bergen Pl.
Another option for STD screenings is at the Health Latino Community Incorporated Nassau Branch on the corner of Merrick Ave. and Smith Street in Merrick.
Some locations may offer free STD testing. These locations might require proof of income, and there’s no guarantee of confidentiality with many of these options.
