The city of Monrovia nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley is fighting an STD crisis. In 2013, Los Angeles County, where it’s located had 50,957 new chlamydia infections and that number increased by nearly 15,000 in 2017 with 64,326 diagnoses. The county had four cities with the highest chlamydia rates in the state in 2017.
Gonorrhea is also on the rise with 13,062 new cases in 2013 more than doubling by 2017 to 26,108 diagnoses. The county also had four cities with the highest gonorrhea rates in the state.
The Los Angeles County Health Department is working to increase HIV education, screenings, and treatment for local communities in hopes of reducing the growing infection rate. In 2016, the area had 1,949 new infections and a rate of 19 new cases per 100,000 people.
There are dozens of locations in Monrovia and nearby in Los Angeles County that offer full STD testing services. ChapCare on E Lime Ave in Monrovia offers screenings at the Mission City Community Network Building.
Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles operates the El Monte Health Center on the corner of N Peck Rd and Lower Azusa. The also run a location at the Pasadena Health Center on the corner of N Lake Ave and Belvidere St.
Another option is the Asian Pacific Health Care Venture at the El Monte/Rosemead Health Center on Baldwin Pl.
Free STD testing may be available at some facilities. Before scheduling an appointment, ask about hidden fees such as treatment and follow-up care. Also, free services will require proof of income.
