What are the STI test options in Upland,CA?

Upland, California is right at the edge of the Greater Los Angeles Metro area and San Bernardino County. Putting Upland right in their sexually transmitted disease crosshairs. In 2017, San Bernardino County Department of Public Health requested community support in elevating STD awareness. A task force was started that aimed to increase the number of people getting screened for preventable diseases. They encourage sexually active residents of the Upland area to get tested early and often.

San Bernardino County reported large increases in both chlamydia and gonorrhea back in 2016 with 60 percent of all new STDs coming from teens and young adults (ages 15-24).

After no cases of congenital syphilis in 2011, that number jumped to 20 in 2016 and continues to rise. Pregnant women with untreated infections risk children being born prematurely or even stillborn. Congenital syphilis is 100% preventable, it’s crucial to get tested at least yearly for STDs even if you have no symptoms.

For affordable, STD clinic locations near the Upland area your best bet is to travel to San Bernardino. There they have a Planned Parenthood where you can get tested for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, syphilis, hepatitis C, and hepatitis B—no appointments necessary. Payment is on a sliding scale based off your income (bring proof) and they will not turn you away if you are unable to pay. Another option is the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health Clinic. They offer the same tests as Planned Parenthood (except herpes and hepatitis C) and you may be eligible for free STD testing or low-cost services.

To find the best services and location for you, use our search tools below to compare location features across Upland clinics with our easy-to-read chart.

Your trusted source for comprehensive and unbiased STD testing locations, statistics, and resources. Backed by board-certified physicians and aligned with CDC guidelines, we're committed to providing accurate, up-to-date information to empower your health choices.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2 provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in Upland, CA?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in Upland, CA?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Additional STD Test Statistics in Upland, CA

According to recent reports, STD rates in California are the highest they’ve been in 25 years. These alarming rates increase the need for reliable sexual education and STD testing services. In San Bernardino County, STD rates have shown some changes in recent years.

Chlamydia rates have remained stable in San Bernardino County since 2011. In 2015, there were 2,059 reported cases of Chlamydia. This represents a rate of 519.8. In 2011, the Chlamydia rate was 522.4. Although the Chlamydia rate has remained stable, it is still above the California average of 486.1.

Unlike Chlamydia, Gonorrhea rates in the county are below the statewide average. These statistics reflect significant local efforts to reduce the spread of STDs. Still, Chlamydia rates are on the rise. The Chlamydia rate has doubled in San Bernardino County since 2011 from 68.0 to 129.5. Clearly, additional efforts are needed to curb these increasing rates.

In 2015, there were 134 reported cases of Primary & Secondary Syphilis. The Syphilis rate has increased every year since 2011. Throughout California, these rates have consistently increased, raising particular concern for public health officials.

California ranks among the U.S. states with the most new diagnoses of HIV/AIDS. In 2014, San Bernardino recorded 205 cases of HIV. This number represents 4.1% of the statewide cases.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Upland, CA

Students and families rely on local schools to provide reliable information about sexual health. Educators are responsible for equipping students with the information they need to make healthy life decisions. In order to make informed decisions, teens need comprehensive information about preventing STDs.

Despite considerable funding for sexual health programs in California, there are considerable gaps in sexual education curriculum. According to a report commissioned by Planned Parenthood, sexual education courses in Upland and throughout San Bernardino County are “inconsistent, largely inadequate, and out of compliance.”

Sexual education information must be clear, accurate and reliable. Inconsistencies in curriculum  can undercut this reliability. In San Bernardino public schools, some courses do not cover ways to prevent teen pregnancies, and many offer insufficient information about preventing STDs. These courses should be more comprehensive and include important topics such as condom use, STD prevention and access to contraception.

While some gaps exist, sexual education courses in local schools are superior to those in other parts of the country. High schools in Upland include Upland High School and Hillside High School. There are several middle schools including Pioneer Junior High School and Upland Junior High School. At all of these schools, sexual education courses are taught to students.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Upland, CA

Teens and young adults in Upland are disporotionaly affected by STDs. With over half of high school students engaged in sexual activities, teens are predisposed to risks of STDs. Confronting this issue requires a full picture of the STD rates in the community.

In California, the majority of Gonorrhea cases are reported in the 20-24 and 25-29 ages brackets. Cases in San Bernardino County were split evenly between males and females. In 2015, there 1,367 reported cases among females and 1,388 cases among males. The statistics in California are split based on race. There were 10,375 cases reported among African Americans, 13,924 cases reported among Hispanics and 13,485 cases reported among Whites.

The total Syphilis cases in California show no definitive trends based on age. It is clear, however, that Syphilis rates are highest among Hispanic and African American populations. In 2015, the Syphilis rate among African Americans was 28.3 and 12.5 among Hispanics.

Chlamydia cases in San Bernardino can be clearly broken down by demographic indicators. The majority of cases are reported among women. The rate among women was 739, while the rate among men was 298. Across the state, the highest rates are found among African Americans with a rate of 913 in 2015.

Similar to nationwide trends, HIV/AIDS rates in the area are highest among men. Cases are most common among MSM (men who have sex with men).
