STD Testing and Sexual Education in Buffalo Grove, IL

Within the local system, students are facing the same issue as in other schools across the country. However, educators in Illinois seem to be more determined to teach medically sound facts than those in some other states. In August of 2013, Bill HB 2675 was passed. This piece of legislation prohibits abstinence only education within public schools. If schools decide to not include comprehensive information they can choose to not have a sexual education course at all.

The Ruth M. Rothstein Core Center in Cook county offers HIV intervention and education as well as counseling. There is a resource center located on site for giving patients access to medical materials and the internet. The goal of the center is to provide inclusive care for its patients – providing everything they need under one roof.

The Cook County Department of Public Health has an in depth online data bank. This site is filled with resources and information pertaining to STI’s and HIV / AIDS. The site also includes external publications and a clinic locator for residents.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has published their own educational material about sexual health. They not only provide educational information, but curriculum as well. This includes information for not only students, but parents as well. Their belief is that by building a knowledgeable foundation they can create a healthier sense of sexual awareness amongst students.

The closest Planned Parenthood, which is located at the Rogers Health Center in Chicago offers educational resources to patients. They also provide condoms. This center is 19 miles from Buffalo Grove.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Buffalo Grove, IL

In both Cook and Lake counties, the ethnic demographic most impacted by HIV and STI’s are the Black, non-Hispanics. In 2014, Lake County reported 648 cases of HIV and Cook County reported 1,216 cases within the Black, non-Hispanic demographic. Black, non-Hispanics are infected 6.4 times more than White, non-Hispanics. There could possibly be a correlation between the fact that Black, non-Hispanics make less than the Asian, Pacific Islander and White, non-Hispanics and the amount of Black, non-Hispanics impacted by HIV / AIDS and STI’s.

Males are also more impacted by STI’s and HIV / AIDS than females. In 2014 there were 950 male cases reported in Cook County and 187 male cases reported in Lake County. Female cases were fewer by more than half. Males also had a lower graduation rate in comparison to females. In 2015, there were 63,222 male graduates as opposed to 89,973 female graduates in both counties combined.

In addition to the male versus female rates, Black, non-Hispanics also had a lower graduation rate, falling below White, non-Hispanics and Latinos. In 2015, there were 77,048 White, non-Hispanic graduates, 21,948 Latino graduates, and 21,442 Black, non-Hispanic graduates. The Black, non-Hispanic graduation rate was only 14.9% in comparison to the White, non-Hispanic rate which was 53.5%. This low graduation rate could possibly correlate with the high amount of Black, non-Hispanic males infected with STI’s and HIV / AIDS.

STI Testing Resources in Buffalo Grove, IL

One location is the Cook County Department of Public Health North District Office. This location offers resources for those who believe that may have been infected with STI’s and/or HIV / AIDS. The department is run by a leadership team of several professionals. Better Sexual Health in Buffalo Grove, IL

Because Buffalo shares jurisdiction with two counties it benefits from having more resources than other towns. Because it is smaller, it does not necessarily need as many testing and treatment locations as other places. It seems to provide adequate resources, testing, and treatment for the population it has. What the academic educational setting is lacking, local programs have tried to educate the community about STI’s and HIV / AIDS. While there is no Planned Parenthood within the city limits of Buffalo Grove, there is a center in nearby Chicago. Buffalo Grove also has local clinics where testing and treatment is provided. Demographics and statistics suggest that Black, non-Hispanics are most likely to contract an STI.

It could be argued that this is a result of the percentage Black, non-Hispanics living in poverty and receiving a lower salary when compared to other ethnicities. Regardless of the statistics, the best way to prevent STI’s is to either remain abstinent or practice safe sex with your partner. Rochester Hills also provides several online resources that help educate about STI’s. One of which is: https://www.lakecountyil.gov/2024/HIV-AIDS-Care.  As always, if you believe you have contracted an STI, please search out a testing center and seek treatment.
