What are the STI test options in Mount Prospect,IL?

Mount Prospect in Illinois falls in two townships and a county. Cook County is the 2nd most populous county in America. Right afterno surprise hereLos Angeles County. Being a quick 20 miles northwest of Chicago means Mount Prospect shares their STD reporting rates.

For 2016, chlamydia rates in Cook County reached 461.1 per 100,000 people tested. Mirroring a nationwide trend, those diagnoses were found most frequently in young women aged 15-24 years.

It’s especially encouraged for women to get regularly screened as chlamydia is often asymptomatic and if left unchecked can lead to infertility.

2016 rates for gonorrhea in the Mount Prospect area were 112.7 per 100,000 people. Primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis for Cook County that same year was 8.3 for every 100,000. In 2017, Chicago reported 743 new cases of HIV. With 84.2% of them being in males, and 15.8% found in women. 171 people in Chicago living with HIV passed away in 2017. The Chicago Department of Public Health seeks to counteract this problem by offering preventive clinical services, screening, and treatment at no cost. Call to find out if you qualify for free STD testing or visit them on location if you’re ever in Chicago.

For cheap, affordable testing in Mount Prospect, there are few options to consider. Central Family Care on Central Road can treat symptomatic STIs and trichomoniasis. If you don’t mind paying out of pocket, you can skip the doctor and check out True Test Labs in Elk Grove Village. They offer a comprehensive panel for STD testing. Otherwise, your best bet may be to journey into the Chicago metro area for more treatment options.

Your trusted source for comprehensive and unbiased STD testing locations, statistics, and resources. Backed by board-certified physicians and aligned with CDC guidelines, we're committed to providing accurate, up-to-date information to empower your health choices.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2 provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in Mount Prospect, IL?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in Mount Prospect, IL?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Mount Prospect, IL

The public school system in Chicago recently reviewed and updated its sexual education program.

Developed by the Chicago Public Schools Office of Student Health and Wellness, the overhaul and resulting policy were designed among other factors to align the Chicago public school system with the standards in the national HIV/AIDS strategy developed by President Obama.

The new program determines that a set amount of time is spent on sex education in every grade, starting with kindergarten. This is while in most US public schools, sex education starts in the fifth grade.

The goal of the program is to provide students of all ages with accurate and appropriate information so they can make healthy choices. This should help students build a foundation of knowledge concerning relationships and health. This will carry them through the preteen and adolescent years and beyond. Kindergartners should learn the basics of anatomy, reproduction, personal safety, and healthy relationships.  Here are more details.

  • Kindergarten to third grade sex health education should have a focus on family, feelings, and touching this is appropriate and not appropriate.
  •  Fourth grade sex education should begin to learn about puberty and HIV with discussion emphasizing that the virus cannot be transmitted through everyday contact such as shaking hands or sharing food.
  •  Fifth grade to the end of high school sex education should emphasize reproduction, transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases, bullying and contraption, and abstinence.

The Chicago sex education instruction should also cover sexual orientation and gender identity. Students should be introduced to terms and definitions associated with sexual identity, including those related to heterosexual and LGBT populations. This is part of an effort to bring awareness, promote tolerance, and prevent bullying. This statement was made by the Chicago School Board.

Parents or guardians of students are allowed to opt their children out of the sexual health education program if they would like.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Mount Prospect, IL

Demographics play a role in the number of STIs in your city as well as Chicago and Cook County with higher rates than national averages.

There is no one reason that STI rates are so high. Poverty and drug use can be part of the reason. Poverty can lead to homelessness and this can lead to being forced to have sex to have a place to stay. Victims do not feel that can discuss an STI status or use of a condom in such a situation.

With drug use if you are addicted you may not have the money for your next fix. This means you can feel forced to have sex to get money for drugs.

While the number of STIs are the highest among poor black and gay males, we now see these STI numbers grow in more affluent areas. It is affecting young females who are white.

As we see heroin spread we see those who are addicted put themselves into a dangerous situation to get high. STIs have no barriers. They can affect those of any economic or social status.

Health officials continue to address the high HIV rates among young black men in the area who have sex with men. Some of the people being affected by HIV today are too young to remember when the disease was considered to be a death sentence. They are seeing people living longer with the disease and believe they will be all right.

There are trends, but in general, risk for STDs is highest among people who have multiple sex partners or who don’t use condoms consistently so that is a factor in why rates are so high. Areas with relatively high rate of poverty and unemployment feed an environment that contributes to rates of STD prevalence.

Covered is testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, syphilis, and other STDs. The staff is trained to work with someone in your situation, trying to protect your privacy and confidentiality. HIV testing is done with a blood sample from a finger stick, and If are are 19 to 26 with no health insurance, you could get help for an HPV vaccine (Gardisil) at no charge. If you are not sure how often to get tested you could consider that according to a professor at Chicago’s Northwestern University, the frequency at which individuals should get tested depends on their lifestyle and sexual practices. With one or two sex partners a year, you can get tested once or twice a year according to the professor and with multiple sex partners every month or week, get tested every three to six months.

Maybe you have heard that clinics have had budget cuts due to state budget issues so you should keep in mind that the AIDS Healthcare Foundation Wellness Center is located in Chicago and can help you. It offers STI and HIV screening on a walk-in basis. This is to encourage city residents to get tested more often. They test using swabs, urine samples, and blood samples with the average age of clients at 20 to 30 years old.
